Soshanguve Local Football Association obtained the runner up spot in all divisions (Under 11 /13 and 15) at the Mayoral Cup tournament which took place at the Mamelodi sports ground on Saturday 23 June.
The tournament is hosted annually by the Tshwane Municipality together with South African Football Association, The local football Association and Mamelodi Sundowns FC as a youth development project.
The tournament started on the 2nd of June making it the 11th tournament hosted in counting. More than 18 teams took part in the tournament and amongst them was Mabopane Local football team, Winterveld Local football League, Ga-rankuwa Local Football League and most importantly the Football Association Pretoria who scooped the first place position for Under 11 /13 and 15).
The championship winners will have an opportunity to be selected and registered in various regional, provincial and national tournaments where they will represent the city of Tshwane. The first place winners also received gold medals and a trophy, and the runner up received silver medals as well as a trophy to come home with. However, no team went home empty handed as each participating team was awarded a soccer kit.
The Director of the Sports development and regional Operation in Tshwane, Tshepo Rakhahla, said “the successful players will be closely monitored to track their progress by professional players.
“The aim of this league is to address social issue such as fighting drug addiction and alcohol in local communities. It is known that when teenagers have a lot of time for themselves they end up misbehaving so allowing them to take part in such programmes helps them stay away from many wrong doings,” he said.
Thomas Mphora, Mamelodi Sundowns Satellites coach took to social media and expressed how happy he was about his ‘boys’ performance on Saturday particularly that the SOLFA took the runner up position.
“This just means that the boys are not so far away from proclaiming victory, they just need to work harder and hope that next year we will have the first position.” He said.
